Acute diarrhea — three or more loose stools in 24 hours, lasting under two weeks — is most often caused by a viral or bacterial infection, though it can also follow food poisoning, travel, or antibiotic use. For most healthy adults it resolves within a few days, and the priority is preventing dehydration rather than stopping the diarrhea itself. Blood in the stool, high fever, or diarrhea lasting more than a few days warrants medical evaluation.
