About Food Poisoning (Foodborne Illness)

Food poisoning is an acute gastrointestinal illness from eating food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or toxins, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping that usually begin within hours to a few days of exposure. Most cases resolve on their own within 1–3 days, and the main risk is dehydration rather than the infection itself. Bloody stool, high fever, signs of dehydration, or symptoms lasting more than a few days need medical attention.
