A vaginal yeast infection (vulvovaginal candidiasis) is an overgrowth of Candida fungus that normally lives in the vagina in small amounts, causing itching, irritation, and discharge. It's extremely common, and uncomplicated first-time infections usually respond well to standard antifungal treatment. Recurrent infections (4+ per year), pregnancy, or uncertainty about the diagnosis — symptoms can overlap with other infections — are reasons to see a doctor before self-treating.
